The Japan Boxing Commission was created in 1952. Yoshio Shirai was the first Japanese boxer to be crowned a world champion in 1952. Shirai won the world flyweight title in a decision in his international debut at the age of 29 in May 1952, and successfully defended it four times before losing on points to Pascal Perez of Argentina in November 1954 in Tokyo. In 1967, the first world title bout between two Japanese fighters was Hiroshi Kobayashi and Yoshiaki Numata. In 12 rounds, Kobayashi KO'd Numata inTokyo, to win the jr. lightweight title. As for a distinct boxing style adopted by most Japanese boxers, they usually train in a classic boxer/puncher or swarmer/pressure style because of their size and stature.

Kyoei Boxing Gym:
Kyoei Boxing Gym was founded in 1959 where many champions have trained throughout the years. The gym has three floors including two elevated formal boxing rings, heavy bags, training machines and both male and female locker rooms. The gym is located in cental Tokyo in Shinjuku.

Philia Boxing Gym:
Philia Boxing Gym is located in Osaka, Japan. The boxing school has different classes everyday except for Mondays. They also hold boxing classes specific to conditioning, weightloss and entertainment such as there Rhythm Boxing class which is a dance to hip-hop music using boxing techniques.
